During a recent visit to Missouri, we pulled into town very late needing to stop at the all night service station near our hotel to remove many hours worth of bug guts from our windshield so we would be ready for an early appointment the next day. Two overweight twenty- something’s standing in line to purchase Cheetos and Mountain Dew were having an in-depth and loud discussion about some fantasy role-playing game and the quirks and powers of their favorite other-worldly being. They embodied every stereotype you can imagine (and then some).
Being at least somewhat unplugged from Internet activity for about 6 weeks has been an interesting exercise. My times of “unpluggedness” usually leave me wondering if this semi-imaginary world of online presence really matters. Could it be an imaginary world for nerdish individuals unable to sense significance in the real world? (None of us want to be that guy!)
Usually, I come to realize that Internet communication and friendships are part of real life. I can think of a handful of people who have enriched my life and I deeply value as friends who I have met through the web. So, as usual, I am in an endless search to try to make this Internet activity as real as possible.
My hiatus from this world was to allow time to get some things settled. I am happy to report that my wife has a great new job, which removes the specter of imminent financial doom from our minds. Yeah!!! Also, I have been at work developing a home business that we will both be involved with and have obtained all of the required registrations. Soon we will go live with the website and a marketing campaign. It already has been fun doing this together with my wife. However, that work has left me running behind in getting Communitas Collective re-activated and am wondering what that should look and sound like. So, hang in there, I’ll be back soon.
These weeks of Internet absence have been kind of interesting. We have had two severe storms here in the Great Lakes region that seldom sees such summer activity. Both resulted in in uprooted trees, downed power lines, and long power outages. Thankfully, we have a wonderful friend who has a generator! Though June was cool and un-summer like, July came on strong with record heat. We have enjoyed a couple of trips, a weekend in a touristy town north of Milwaukee and a trip to visit family and the KC Chiefs Training Camp in Missouri. I have also enjoyed several bike rides and outdoor concerts, but have tinnitus from getting too close to a U2 tribute band. But then, I like it loud!
I should be making some more noise around here soon.
Thanks for reading!
